Have A Business And Get A Lot Of Storms? Use A Lightning Protection System

by Sarah Morgan

Lightning can cause a lot of damage to a business and can even cause a fire. If your business is in an area that gets a lot of storms, you should consider installing a lightning protection system.  Below are two types of lightning protection systems you can choose from so you can get your business protected from these dangerous storms.

Lightning Rod

One type of lightning protection system that is simple to install is the lightning rod. This rod has a metallic tip that captures the lightning to prevent it from hitting your building. The rod has a triggering system along with conductors that are often made of copper strips or aluminum. These conductors are installed under the ground surrounding your commercial building.

Even though this system may be easier to install you should still have a professional install it for you. The contractor installs the lightning rod on the highest part of your roof. It is tall enough to attract lightning.  When a lightning bolt strikes the rod, it safely channels the volts of energy through the aluminum or copper cables in the ground.

How many lightning rods are installed on the roof depends on how large your home is. This type of lighting protection system is the least expensive option so works well if you are on a budget.

Complete Lightning Protection System

Lightning rods work great to protect your business but if you want more protection, you should install a complete lightning protection system. This involves installing lightning rods along with utility bonding, surge protection, and proper grounding. Conductor cables, ground electrodes, and arrestors are also installed.

This will also provide further protection against strong electrical surges. These electrical surges will damage the electronic devices inside your building, such as computers, servers, routers, and much more. This can also help prevent fires inside the building that happens if lighting enters your structure through, conductor cables, water pipes, oil or gas pipes, and more.

This lightning protection system works well for any type of roof type your business has, including if you have a metal roof. There is much more involved in installing this type of protection system so it will take longer. It is also more expensive than installing a lightning rod system but is well worth the cost.

Contact a company that sells lightning protection systems. They can go over this information with you in much more detail. They can also help you decide what type of lightning protection system will work best for you and your commercial building.
